'Reliably informed': Journalist says Newcastle may already be in disagreement over £30m player Mitchell wants
Not the best of starts for Mitchell ????
Newcastle United’s summer transfer is yet to really get going as the Magpies await their first big singing.
Eddie Howe‘s patience is perhaps being tested as he prepares his side for their trip to Asia next week without any significant changes to his squad.
The Toon are labelled with the tag of having the wealthiest owners in all of football but they have struggled to put that money into action with PSR in play.
Newcastle have been limited to the free agent signing of Lloyd Kelly as well as a number of squad options.
However, the appointment of Paul Mitchell will be viewed as a big boost to the club’s recruitment system with his stunning track record.
But it seems the club and Mitchell may already have had their first disagreement on one of the players which the sporting director has advised they sign.
Newcastle not convinced by Paul Mitchell transfer target
With the transfer window opening last month, Newcastle found themselves sweating at the risk of not complying with PSR.
The Toon were forced to part ways with youngster Elliot Anderson which is an exit that didn’t sit well with Howe.
And in return, fans have seen Kelly, John Ruddy, Odysseas Vlachodimos and more recently Miodrag Pivas come through the doors at St James’ Park.
Since arriving, Mitchell is said to have made a real push for Newcastle to sign Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.
But according to report Alex Crook, the £30m-rated Todibo is a player who has not necessarily convinced everyone on Tyneside.
“Newcastle have, I’m reliably informed, held talks this week, led by Paul Mitchell, the new Sporting Director,” Crook told TalkSPORT.
“At the moment, I don’t think Todibo ends up at St. James’ Park, not entirely convinced the management team want to go down that route, so interesting that Paul Mitchell is already moving the club in a slightly different direction.”
Newcastle in desperate need of another centre-back
The story of Newcastle’s 2023/24 campaign was injury issues which have seen Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles severely affected.
Both of the centre-backs are recovering from significant injuries and are expected to miss the start of the season.
Kelly has been brought in already, but Howe is surely going to want more additions brought in perhaps even with a statement signing.
Malick Thiaw is a player who Newcastle are showing a real interest in but the days are now passing quickly for the Toon to get someone in before they jet off for Japan.
