Philippe Clement may end up being offered a “repentance” service by Patrick Stewart when he begins work at Rangers, according to Hugh Keevins.
Keevins’ column with the Daily Record [1 December] suggests Clement could see his troubled stint at Ibrox reignited when Stewart takes up his position as CEO.
Gers fans have made their feelings abundantly clear at the chaos that has ensued, which on the pitch leaves their side well in the wake of both Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.
But the redeeming qualities of the Europa League – which saw Clemen over a 4-1 win at Nice on Thursday – and Premier Sports [League] Cup final could still turn matters around for the Belgian boss.
“What if Rangers beat Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final in two weeks’ time? Now, in the wake of Thursday night’s remarkable result against Nice, I upgrade my inquiry. What if Philippe Clement wins the Europa League too?”, Keevins appealed.
“Rangers’ new CEO Patrick Stewart is, so the popular rumour goes, starting work on December 16 so he can make the sacking of Clement his first task in the wake of a cup final defeat at the hands of their greatest rivals.
“He might instead be required to organise a service of repentance at Ibrox and invite those who have crucified, vilified and loudly decried the Belgian to publicly acknowledge, and apologise for, the error of their ways.”
Philippe Clement to still turn Rangers’ season around?
If Clement were to grind out a successful campaign at Rangers this year – via achieving the silverware of the League Cup and then carving out another memorable European journey – where would the general consensus be?
The Belgian has been mooted for the sack every week of this season, part and parcel of the Gers job even for those who have been more successful than he; those who have been a lot closer to reclaiming the crown as Scottish champions.
Stewart will make an impression whether he sacks Clement or displays an immense show of loyalty to the 50-year-old.
League performances, finances, the running of operations from top to bottom, it is admittedly all far superior at Celtic – Light Blues fans are not daft regarding this fact and have consequently shouted from the late-refurbished rooftops to voice their discontent.
Clement has unfortunately been a recent representation of that and has a lot to do to move clear of any immediate employment danger.
But should Stewart turn up and lead the critics to apologise for their comments, it could be a demonstration of faith which drives a huge rise around Ibrox.
