Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has been targeted by a number of top clubs in recent years, and so far none of them have been attractive enough to tempt him away from Donostia-San Sebastian. Liverpool will be the latest by the looks of things.
On Wednesday, multiple outlets reported that Liverpool would open talks with Real Sociedad and Zubimendi about a move. The Reds would likely have to activate his €60m release clause to have any hope of signing him, with three years remaining on his contract.
As per HITC, convincing Zubimendi on a move looks no easier. They say that as recently as last week, Zubimendi communicated to intermediaries that he was not interested in a move to the Premier League, amid interest from Manchester United and Liverpool.
That tallies with further reporting this week that United have once again picked up the phone to Barcelona to speak about Frenkie de Jong. Certainly it seems there are few positions in the game as coveted as a holding midfielder currently – as shown in the Euro 2024 final, Spain have the fortune of two of the best in the business.
