Rangers will only receive an away allocation of 3,700 tickets for their Europa League visit to Manchester United next month, Mark Walker has reported.
On page 64 of the Daily Record [14 December], Walker revealed that United will not grant Gers fans any further tickets than the planned amount due to the increased home interest in the clash now Ruben Amorim has begun his manager’s job.
The two face off at Old Trafford on 23 January in the next ‘Battle of Britain’ for Philippe Clement’s side, who on Thursday (12 December) night played out a lively 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Ibrox.
Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt were the last European outfit to visit Man Utd in Europe, and received a boosted allocation of 6,714 – which as Walker points out, comprises about 12 per cent of the total population of their local town.
Rangers fans will be furious at Man Utd decision
The call made by Manchester United will not go down too well with Rangers fans, many of whom will be left disappointed with the massive demand that will go into away tickets at Old Trafford.
Many thousands will be denied the trip in what will be the seventh of eight league phase fixtures in the Europa League, with the Light Blues in the frame to progress to the knockout stages – either with or without a play-off round.
With respect to Bodo/Glimt, their demand will have been a fraction of what Gers fans would ideally have requested, and tickets will only become gold dust due to the increased home crowd brought about by Amorim’s arrival in place of Erik ten Hag.
Rangers and Man Utd have only ever met in competitive action on four occasions, with United winning three including the last one – a Champions League group stage win at Ibrox by a single Wayne Rooney goal in 2010. Gers, however, secured a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag did bring his old side to Scotland in the summer, with a friendly contest played out at Murrayfield while Ibrox was undergoing delayed refurbishment works. United won the match 2-0 on 20 July, with former loanee Amad Diallo opening the scoring on the day.
In other Rangers news, James Tavernier has been criticised ahead of the Scottish League Cup final.
