Ruben Amorim sends brutally honest warning to Manchester United fans
'I know it's really hard to be a Manchester United coach and say these things.'
Ruben Amorim has warned Manchester United fans that ‘the storm will come’ and his team will ‘be found out in some games’ as he tries to implement his style of play.
The new Red Devils manager has made an unbeaten start at the club, with two wins and a draw in his opening three matches.
However, the draw came against Ipswich and the first victory was a fairly chaotic 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.
A 4-0 rout of Everton on Sunday was encouraging for United fans, but Amorim has warned them there is a lot of work to do and very little time on the training pitch to do it.
The Portuguese coach says there is only so much he can get across to his players during a busy schedule of matches and there will inevitably be some bad days out to come as changes are made.
‘I would like to say different things, but I have to say it again: the storm will come,’ he said. ‘I don’t know if you use that expression but we are going to have difficult moments and we will be found out in some games. And I know that because I’m knowing my players and I know football and I follow football.
‘So I understand the difference between the teams and we are in the point in that we are putting simple things in the team, without training, and you feel it in this game against Everton. They change a little bit the way they were building up. They are a very good team and we were with a lot of problems because we cannot change it by calling one thing to the captain.
‘So we don’t have this training. So let’s focus on each game, on the performance, what we have to improve, trying to win games. And that is the focus.’
Amorim admits Manchester United fans may not want to hear that they can expect below-par performances, but is trying to honestly manage expectations of the task ahead of him.
The Red Devils take on Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday night and he noted that Mikel Arteta is a long way further down the path with the Gunners than he is with his team.
‘I know it’s really hard to be a Manchester United coach and say these things in press conferences,’ he said. ‘We want to win all the time, no matter what. We are going to try to win but we know that we are in a different point if you compared to Arsenal.
‘So it is what it is and we will try to win it and we go with confidence to win, but we know that we need to play very well to win the next football match.’
Arteta sounds impressed with Amorim and, although it might take some time for him to fully implement his ideas, feels that the new Old Trafford chief has made an immediate impact.
‘Well, you can see his fingerprints [on the club], you know what he wants to do straight away, I think he’s been very clear,’ Arteta said.
‘He’s been very successful with Sporting, it’s remarkable after so many years what he achieved there, especially in the way he did it and the way his teams have been playing.
‘He brings energy to the club, to the players, new ideas and that’s always something that’s positive but we have to focus on what we have to do.’
