'Run that risk...' - Wenham shares concern amid multi-million Tottenham transfer news

John Wenham is concerned that Real Betis will neglect Johnny Cardoso’s development after reaching a transfer agreement with Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the 22-year-old has the potential to be a positive signing in North London.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (30 August), Tottenham agreed a priority option with Real Betis to sign Cardoso as part of the deal which saw Giovani Lo Celso move to the La Liga side.

Betis’ president Angel Haro confirmed this news (via The Times, 3 September), revealing that Spurs have a two-week window in 2025 to trigger their buy-option for Cardoso, which is worth £21million.

However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is fearful that the midfielder’s playing time will be limited this season.

“This could be a good bit of business for Tottenham,” Wenham said.

“However, now the incentive isn’t so much with Betis to develop Cardoso. I’m sure, wherever possible, they will look to start other midfielders.

“They’re not going to focus on developing a player for Tottenham to sign next year.

“Therefore, the club were always going to run that risk with a deal such as this one. However, price-wise, it could still prove to be a steal if all goes to plan.”

Tottenham to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis?

Cardoso is yet to start a match in La Liga for Real Betis this season. The American has made just two appearances off the bench, playing a total of 46 minutes across four matches.

Therefore, it appears as though Wenham’s concerns are completely justified.

This is bad news for Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou.

They have a priority option to sign a potentially exciting player.

However, it looks as though they won’t have the opportunity to see that player in action to actually decide whether or not they want to sign him.

All Spurs can do is hope that Cardoso begins to feature more prominently as the season progresses.
