Sean Dyche has admitted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation will not change his plans for the forward at Everton.
The England international’s current deal on Merseyside expires at the end of the season and while the door remains open for him to pen new terms, no agreement has yet been reached for an extension [Liverpool Echo, 28 September].
While some have suggested the striker could be dropped in the coming weeks, Dyche insists he will not stop playing him while his future remains unresolved, setting out the rules Calvert-Lewin has to follow at Goodison.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on Wednesday (30 October) he said: “I don’t do that. He will just keep playing.
“Get the shirt on, play hard, those are the rules. All the rest of it will look after itself.”
What has happened to Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park?
While there has been so much talk around Calvert-Lewin’s future on Merseyside so far this season, inside the Everton changing room there appears to be an air of calmness around the whole situation.
Dyche isn’t often drawn into debates around player’s future or contract situations, so it is no surprise that he was reluctant to suggest Calvert-Lewin would be bombed out of the fold if his new offer remained unsigned.
But his suggestion that “all the rest of it will look after itself” makes it sound like there is some confidence the England international could put pen to paper on a new contract without any rash decisions needing to be made.
Ultimately, the forward has followed Dyche’s rules so far this season and while that remains the case, there is no reason to axe him from the starting line-up, especially with both Armando Broja and Youseff Chermiti out injured.
Hopefully, Calvert-Lewin’s situation will be resolved sooner rather than later once the Friedkin Group’s takeover is completed so that the discussion around his future can be put to bed once and for all.
