'Self-inflicted decline' - King shares 'Devastated' Bennett verdict over current Rangers events

Dave King says Rangers must pull together moving forward, adding John Bennett is “devastated” by current events.

Chairman Bennett has come in for scathing criticism in recent weeks due to several factors including a disjointed transfer window, the ongoing chaos at Ibrox and the departure of CEO James Bisgrove to Saudi Arabia.

This was then supplemented by last weekend’s comprehensive Old Firm defeat at Celtic Park which turned out to be a visual representation of each club’s fortunes in Glasgow – leading to a hostile reception from livid Gers fans when the squad returned to Ibrox.

King, speaking to the Daily Record [7 September], defended Bennett and slammed those who jeered the players: “Our club finds itself in a largely self-inflicted decline but turning on our own players is not the Rangers way.

“I know John Bennett is devastated by current events and is working immensely hard behind the scenes.

“We have a challenging period ahead and need to pull together to get through it.”

Rangers fans are watching their club in disarray

People can have whatever view they like around the booing of your own players, and the treatment of your club’s board, but it has to be remembered Rangers fans are watching constant farce envelop their club while their bitter rivals are merrily bouncing their way to another title, even this early.

The goodwill towards lifelong supporter Bennett from his important role back in 2012 has diminished since the chaos that has continued since he took over as chairman from Douglas Park last year.

In between home games at Hampden, unconvincing performances and ludicrous setbacks regarding Ibrox, the transfer window and boardroom operations, the buck stops with Bennett.

A case of pulling together in unison and reading from the same script is lovely in theory, but fans will simply not sit back and settle for the way they are watching their club stagger between problems.

All the while, five miles east, Celtic are strolling and enjoying every minute of it; the Light Blues have worked so abundantly hard to restore the two-horse race which typifies Scottish football that the potential of it unravelling is unthinkable.

The next few months will dictate a heck of a lot in Govan.
