'Sensational' transfer update emerges as Everton failed with late signing despite multimillion bid - report

Everton were rejected by Hellas Verona in the final days of the transfer window after they tried to buy Jackson Tchatchoua, Tuttosport reports.

According to the Italian outlet’s website on 5 September both the Toffees and Rennes were turned down in their bids to sign the right-back as the Serie A side are now destined for a “sensational” profit after only signing him permanently this summer.

Everton offered €10million [£8.4m] and their Ligue 1 transfer rivals €12m [£10.1m] but neither was enough to land the 22-year-old, who scored his first goal for Verona at the weekend.

Sean Dyche wanted Jackson Tchatchoua at Everton

Tchatchoua cost the Italians only £1.69m to make his loan permanent earlier this year and Tutto Mercato Web reported on 3 July they were asking for £6.77m amid interest from Goodison Park, but clearly they now have an eye on much more.

Had the Toffees been successful it might have helped avoid a nightmare start to the season which has put Dyche under heavy sack pressure already.

Right-back has become a problem position for the manager amid fitness struggles for captain Seamus Coleman and ex-Rangers man Nathan Patterson.

Last-season’s back-up option Ben Godfrey is now at Atalanta after he rejected a contract extension in the summer [HITC, 11 June], and 39-year-old Ashley Young then let Dyche down as he got himself sent off in the first game of the season.

If Tchatchoua does end up going for a massive profit in the next few windows he will join a list of players who the Toffees have identified as strong targets and narrowly missed out on before their transfer value exploded, including West Ham’s Mohamed Kudus before his £38m move to the London Stadium [Sky Sports].

The right-back picture in the Toffees squad doesn’t look sustainable long-term with Coleman and Young potentially retiring before long, and Patterson not seemingly favoured while Dyche is in charge.

That might not be so much longer but a new signing at the position whenever it is next affordable would be no surprise, even if it now looks unlikely to be Tchatchoua.

In other Everton news, a high-profile manager is admired by the Toffees as Dyche sacking talks have emerged.
