Philippe Clement would have been sacked as Rangers manager if his team’s performances in Europe were as poor as they are in the league, according to Simon Jordan.
The talkSPORT pundit reckons the Belgian tactician can boost his credibility at Ibrox by leading the Light Blues to a win over Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on 15 December.
Jordan added that Clement retains some level of support from the Gers fanbase due to the team’s form in the UEFA Europa League, thus allowing him to cling on to the job.
“Ultimately, if he [Clement] beats Celtic in the cup final, then of course, it gives him credibility”, he said on talkSPORT [2 December, 12:29 pm].
“He’s got credibility in Europe right now because obviously his side are eighth in the Europa League, in an automatic spot above Tottenham.
“So, he retains some degree of resonance with the Rangers fans because if they were getting bashed up in Europe as well as underperforming in the league, he probably would have been gone by now.”
Philippe Clement told what could have got him sacked at Rangers by now
Jordan is right about Rangers’ performances in the Europa League offering solace to the fans even as they sit 11 points behind Celtic in the title race.
The Ibrox outfit are eighth in the European competition with 10 points, having won three and drawn one of their five games so far.
Meanwhile, Tottenham, their upcoming opponents in the tournament, are placed one spot behind, with the only goal difference separating the two teams.
One reason Rangers have been reluctant to sack Clement is the absence of a permanent chairman and a CEO at the club [Ludo Vandewalle].
However, with Patrick Stewart taking office as the Gers’ new CEO on 16 December and Malcolm Offord touted to take John Bennett’s place [The Scottish Sun], the former Monaco boss could be on thin ice.
The games against Celtic and Tottenham in the middle of December could ultimately determine Clement’s future in Govan.
In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist is hopeful that this does not happen when the Gers face Tottenham in the Europa League on 12 December.
