Glenn Murray believes that Alex McCarthy showed why he deserves to start for Southampton after making some excellent saves against Everton in the EFL Cup.

The Toffees exited the competition on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time on Tuesday (17 September).

It was a hard fought game which saw the away keeper McCarthy make a point to his manager, which Murray mentioned live on Sky Sports News on 17 September (8:58pm).

He said: “Beto gets a touch and plays [Jesper] Lindstrom though. He has so much time but Alex McCarthy produces a superb save. He’s sent a message to Russell Martin after they signed Aaron Ramsdale.”

Everton lose on penalties against Southampton

This was a game that could have turned the tide for Everton after a poor start in the Premier League.

There is a dour atmosphere surrounding the Toffees at the moment and the cup provided a perfect opportunity to get back to winning ways.

The tension was lifted when Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the opener before supporters were dragged back down to earth by Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

The first half ended 1-1 but things didn’t get much better after the interval with a general lack of chances for either side.

Lindstrom had the pick of them but was denied by a top save by McCarthy who kept the away side in the tie.

Either side could have taken the win on penalties and it could be argued that the Toffees deserved the win after their share of the game, but it was not to be in another blow for Sean Dyche.

It has been a difficult few weeks for Dyche and the pressure will now only ramp up after this underwhelming performance.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche’s fate is almost certain ahead of a pivotal week in charge.
