Solanke to Chelsea: Ex-PL CEO can't believe deal could get done

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea should not pursue a deal to bring Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke back to the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the 26-year-old is “not the solution they are looking for”.

Chelsea have hunted a new striker in the last few transfer windows and have placed Solanke, who started his career at Stamford Bridge, on their summer target list.

However, Football Insider revealed on Monday (22 July) that the Blues feel the Bournemouth star’s £65million release clause is “prohibitive” to a potential deal.

The one-time England international hit 19 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season – his most prolific top-flight campaign.

Chelsea’s top scorer in the 2023-24 campaign was Cole Palmer with 25 goals, while striker Nicolas Jackson chipped in with a haul of 17 strikes.

Wyness claimed Solanke is “too similar” to the existing options on the books at Stamford Bridge.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t see it happening at all.

“Certainly not for those kinds of numbers.

“While he’s shown some form for Bournemouth, I think that’s where he should stay.

“I don’t think he’s a Chelsea player. He’s not the solution they’re looking for.

“He’s a bit too similar to what they already have going forward, so I don’t think that one is a goer.”
