SPFL manager takes sly dig at Rangers ace after what he saw v Kilmarnock

Livingston manager Andy Nightingale has shared that St Johnstone’s strikers worry him more than Rangers ace Cyriel Dessers does at the moment.

The Nigeria international has now gone five games without hitting the back of the net after his latest blank versus Kilmarnock, leaving the Gers without a clinical focal point for their attack.

Speaking on the Open Goal Podcast (22 October) Nightingale aimed a sly dig towards the Rangers talisman.

“Go back to looking at St Johnstone, you are saying about the two strikers. They are a handful,” he said.

“We are looking at St Johnstone and that is what we are saying. Going into a game, we would be worried about that.

“Going into a game we have been worried about [Adama] Sidibe and [Benjamin] Kimpioka. Going into a Rangers game just now… [he shrugs]. St Johnstone, you are worried about the two strikers.”

Cyriel Dessers needs to improve his form for Rangers soon

The case of Dessers is a curious one. While the Nigeria international ended last season as Rangers’ top scorer, his lack of consistency in front of the net has always hampered the Gers in one way or another.

This season has been no different. Dessers is Clement’s top scorer but more often than not this term, his finishing has been poor.

Goal droughts can be expected from wingers or attacking midfielders, but number nines are supposed to try and bag a goal every other game at this level or at least every two.

The 29-year-old is Clement’s first choice but now Danilo has returned to action for the B team, he could give him a run for his money, if he stays fit.

Hamza Igamane’s transfer was lauded by Clement in the summer. The Morocco international is second in command in that position but when he’s been called upon this season, his performances have been poor.

If Rangers truly want to fight for the Scottish Premiership title this season, Dessers will have to step things up a gear ASAP.
