James Tavernier and Jack Butland were spotted clashing on the pitch during Rangers win against Motherwell at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Daily Record journalist Graeme Young shared on 3 November that the two experienced players had been spotted “letting off steam” at Hampden during their Scottish League Cup semi-final victory.

Philippe Clement’s side were 1-0 down at the time but came back to win 2-1 thanks to Nedim Bajrami’s late winner – which came after Tavernier had been hooked and Butland took up the mantle of captain.

When two teammates disagree on the pitch and things take a turn for the worse, it’s usually up to the captain or a senior player to intervene and cool hostilities, focusing things on the task at hand.

However, seeing his long-term skipper and number one at the centre of an argument would have left Clement crestfallen on the touchline with his side trailing at Hampden Park.

Butland is the choice of many to become the Bears’ permanent captain if and when Tavernier moves on from Ibrox, with the veteran full-back having stayed put last summer despite plenty of transfer interest.

Clement has been Tavernier’s staunchest defender amid a barrage of criticism for the 33-year-old in recent months, but replacing him on 67 minutes suggests a potential change of heart from the Belgian.

Given the Gers completed their turnaround with Tavernier on the sidelines, Clement may be inclined to leave him there, resulting in the undroppable Butland getting used to wearing the captain’s armband.

In other Rangers news, an Ibrox legend has shared his verdict on the club’s likelihood of sacking Philippe Clement this season.
