Stefan Borson: Aston Villa face 'really big' points deduction problems

Aston Villa are facing “really big problems” from a profit and sustainability (PSR) perspective next season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Villa’s qualification for the Champions League will increase their wages considerably, while the new signings will add to their amortisation costs.

Football Insider revealed last month the West Midlands giants had to raise £60million in player sales to avoid a potential points deduction next season.

Unai Emery’s side are believed to have passed PSR after making a number of sales before submitting their accounts on 30 June.

Villa sold Douglas Luiz, Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman in the final few days of the month to ensure they didn’t break the rules.

But the Premier League club have already signed Lewis Dobbin, Ross Barkley, Ian Maatsen, Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea as they prepare for Champions League football next season.

Aston Villa to face PSR problems despite revenue boost

Borson is adamant Villa will face PSR issues again over the coming year despite predicting a considerable rise in their revenue.

“They have got really big problems next season from a PSR perspective,” Borson told Football Insider.

“They have the positives of better revenue from the Champions League and the new kit deal.

“They will probably move their top line in a base case by probably £50million, so that’s great news.

“The problem is they are going to have quite a bunch of additional costs because the wages will presumably go up on the back of the Champions League qualification.

“There will be a number of players who have got Champions League clauses and there will also be a number of new signings. You would think the wage bill is going to go up considerably.

“They are also going to add quite a bit in terms of amortisation costs for the new signings.

“Maatsen on his own is going to add something like £8million to the amortisation line and the rest of them maybe the same again.

“They are going to buy more new players as well, so they are going to have quite a substantial hit to the costs.

“That’s not even talking about the costs that go with more games and being a more active club in the season.”

In other news, Aston Villa plan to accept striker offer.
