Celtic could struggle to generate much revenue from their controversial partnership that will see them sell digital sections of their pitch.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it doesn’t feel like an interesting purchase for the club’s supporters.
It was confirmed on 15 November Celtic have agreed a three-year partnership with fan engagement company Sportli.
As part of the agreement, which has caused fury among some supporters, the Scottish champions will sell digital sections of Celtic Park.
It will cost £29.99 to rent one single digital plot per year, or £49.99 for three, with a small portion of each purchase going to the Celtic FC Foundation.
Celtic digital offer doesn’t look like interesting purchase
“We have seen the NFT, Crypto, digital asset space quite active within the sport,” Borson told Football Insider.
“Some people have made money from it.
“Bitcoin is at around $100,000 (£78,000), so I think you have to be quite careful about suggesting that all of these sorts of blockchain-type ventures are all total nonsense, and how could anybody want to be involved in these things.
“There are some high-quality businesses in this space. There are some people who want that product. I wouldn’t buy any of it, but that’s not relevant.
“As long as it’s not fraud and as long as disclosures are there and are transparent, then I think good luck to Celtic in generating revenue from it. But it does seem a bit of a stretch that particular one.
“But as I say, people have debated whether Bitcoin is worth anything for a decade and everybody that said it was worthless has obviously been spectacularly wrong.
“It could well be the same with some of these sorts of digital assets around sport. That’s the challenging dilemma that anybody who wants to put money into these sorts of things has got.
“Everyone has to make their own decisions having reviewed the documentation and everything else.
“On the face of it, it sounds like a stretch in terms of it being an interesting thing to purchase.”
