Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking to cut costs at Old Trafford before overseeing a rebuild.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider United should eventually make some reasonable savings from their current efforts to slash costs.
The Daily Mail reported on 21 August the new regime has axed lunchboxes for matchday staff and cut the number of programmes given to corporate fans in half as part of their cost-saving measures.
It is believed a number of other matchday areas have also been identified for further savings at Old Trafford.
The latest measures arrive after it was revealed 250 members of staff will be made redundant following a financial review led by Ratcliffe and his INEOS team.
Man United will re-invest in areas after rebuild
Borson believes the club’s hierarchy will strip things back and then take a view on whether they need to spend more money in certain areas.
“This is a classic private equity approach,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I think what United will do is go all in, cut everything back to the bare bones and then rebuild from there.
“They will test it themselves as to what the business can cope with having chopped things back.
“If they find that they have overcorrected it by chopping too much cost out, then they will add some more back in.
“But I think Ratcliffe has probably come in and is just asking a lot of questions and, rather than pondering it too long, he’s concluded that they cut the costs and deal with the consequences.
“Then if they need to bring in more people or spend more money in six months’ time, then so be it, but let’s see how it runs on a much more tighter ship than historically and then go from there.
“I would imagine those changes are happening right across the club and United will eventually see some chunky savings from that sort of stuff.”
