Stefan Borson: Man United spent '£30m' on senior man before wielding axe

Manchester United’s decision to end Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial contract could lead to several members of staff keeping their jobs at Old Trafford.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the ex-Man United boss has been paid an “enormous” amount of money over the past 11 years.

Ferguson stepped down as United manager in 2013 after winning 38 trophies during his 26-year spell in charge.

The Scotsman has been retained as a global club ambassador and club director since his exit from the Old Trafford dugout.

But The Athletic reported on 15 October United’s part-owner INEOS has ended the 82-year-old’s ambassadorial contract, which it claims was worth £2.16million a year.

It comes at a time when the Manchester giants are making up to 250 members of staff redundant as part of a determination to slash costs and scrap some “non-essential“ activities.

But Borson revealed removing Ferguson’s fee could lead to some people keeping their jobs at Old Trafford.

He told Football Insider: “If he really has been paid £2-3million for 10 years since leaving the job, that is a very substantial amount of money for a former manager.

“The bottom line is, it can’t go on forever.

“It’s an enormous amount of money, especially in the context of them having to sack people.

“They are sacking people who are presumably paid on average £30,000-35,000, so £2million is a lot to pay.

“If you can save 100 people’s jobs rather than paying Sir Alex Ferguson a global ambassador fee, then you obviously should do.”
