Manchester United will likely spend far more than £2billion if they decide to build a new stadium to replace Old Trafford.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the rise in inflation and general building costs mean the project will likely set United back well beyond what Tottenham and Everton have paid to build their new stadiums.
The Premier League giants have set up an expert task force – which includes Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and ex-defender Gary Neville – as they look to either regenerate Old Trafford or build a new facility altogether.
The Telegraph reported on 29 July the task force has initially concluded the best option would be the creation of a new stadium, boasting a capacity of up to 100,000.
If United decide to push forward with the plans, the proposed development is expected to cost up to £2billion – double the £1billion expenditure of redeveloping Old Trafford – and take six years to complete.
Man United stadium to cost far more than Tottenham and Everton developments
But Borson believes it will cost considerably more than £2billion to build a new facility as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the task force continue to discuss the best option for the club.
“Clearly a brand-new stadium at Old Trafford with 100,000 seats would no doubt be a fantastic stadium, probably one of the best in the world,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The issue United are going to have is it will probably cost a lot more than £2billion.
“You are talking about starting a stadium at some point in the next two or three years and a stadium build could take another two or three years on top of that.
“Tottenham spent something like £1.3-1.5billion on their stadium and the project started there a number of years ago.
“With inflation and the general building costs over the last few years, you can expect the cost of the United stadium to be far in excess of £2billion.
“Even the Everton stadium, which is considerably smaller, is going to cost close to £1billion.
“I would say United will end up spending more than £2billion if they were to build the stadium.”
