'That's a problem' - Chris Sutton moots new Rangers issue in new title race admission

Chris Sutton has suggested Rangers’ midfield will be a “problem” for Philippe Clement in this season’s title race with Celtic.

The Light Blues moved within five points of their Old Firm rivals with a 1-0 win over Dundee United on Sunday (15 September) afternoon thanks to Tom Lawrence’s first-half strike at Tannadice.

Although he admitted the display was one of the Gers’ better this season, Sky Sports pundit Sutton still doesn’t think the Light Blues will have enough to beat Brendan Rodgers’ side to the title this term.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football on Sunday (15 September, 14:22) he said: “Do I see their midfield trio controlling games like Celtic control games?

“No, I don’t and I think that’s a problem but I think we will see gradual improvement. That’s natural and that’s what Philippe Clement is banking on.

“They’ve had an iffy start to the season, today whatever anyone wants to say, it was about the result because had Rangers not won this game I think they would have gone back to Ibrox and there may have been fans waiting there to show their dissatisfaction.

“It was about three points, building and about small steps so fair play to him today.”

While Sunday’s win was a step in the right direction for Clement and his side, there is still a lot of work to be done at Ibrox both on and off the pitch to close the gap to the Hoops in the title race.

Until the Gers manage to find a way to beat Celtic either at Parkhead or Ibrox, it is going to be hard for them to pip Rodgers’ side to the title as they are handing their Glasgow neighbours an advantage whenever they play one another.

Clement and his recruitment team have worked hard to bolster their midfield ranks with the signings of Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron, but it does still feel as though the Light Blues are missing a commanding presence.

Hopefully, both players will be able to continue to develop over the course of the season. As Sutton suggests, this team are growing week after week.

They may not be the finished article yet, but the signs suggest that things are heading in the right direction.
