Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has expressed his dissatisfaction with the treatment he has gotten from Rangers fans despite his decent goalscoring record at the club, Soccernet.ng reports.
Dessers joined Rangers from Cremonese last summer in a deal worth €5 million, but it has been a tough start to life for him. Last season, the 29-year-old striker registered 22 goals and nine assists in 54 appearances across all competitions.
Still, the fans were highly critical of him as they believed he was not prolific enough in front of goal. There were even talks that he was going to leave the club this summer, but Dessers later put those talks to bed.
Last weekend, the Super Eagles failed to find the net in Rangers’ opening game of the Scottish Premiership season. However, he found the net on tuesday night in Rangers’ 1-1 draw against Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
Following his heroics for the Gers, Dessers was in high spirits, but he felt he was not getting the recognition he deserved.
“I don’t have to answer people, I’m just doing my job for the team, for the manager, and for myself. That’s the only thing that matters,” Dessers told BBC.
“It would be nice to get more recognition for what you do, but I get the recognition inside the building and that’s most important thing.”
Despite the criticisms that Dessers has gotten, he can still win the heart of the fans. Rangers are seeking to win the Scottish Premiership for the first time in four season, and Dessers could still become a fan favourite.
