Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher could make a surprise move to Tottenham in January, according to the latest bookmaker odds.
The 26-year-old, who has been in sensational form since replacing Alisson Becker in the Reds’ starting XI, is priced at 6/1 by Gambling.com to join the Lilywhites following Guglielmo Vicario’s injury.
Ange Postecoglou revealed that the Italian faces “months not weeks” [27 November, BBC] on the sidelines following surgery on the ankle that he broke in the 4-0 victory over Manchester City, so it is no surprise that Kelleher has a 14.3 per cent probability of joining the club.
However, Spurs will have competition for his signature with Chelsea, Celtic, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Nottingham Forest all considered more likely to secure a deal according to the oddsmakers.
Tottenham move does not make sense for Kelleher
A move to Spurs is unlikely for the 26-year-old because he is unlikely to accept a back-up role when Vicario returns.
The Irishman is understood to be seeking the opportunity for regular first-team football when he leaves the Reds.
While Postecoglou could offer that in the short-term, Vicario remains the number one in the long-term.
Therefore a move for Kelleher does not make sense and explains why the odds suggest five teams are more likely to sign him.
Spurs should stick it out with Fraser Forster or youngster Luca Gunter whilst the Italian is sidelined and avoid spending unnecessary money in the transfer window.
The Londoners could use that money to better effect and reinforce the squad as they push for Champions League football in the near future.
In other Tottenham news, the club have been named as the perfect destination for an exit-linked Bayern Munich player.
