Tottenham named as ideal club for Leon Goretzka amid FC Bayern exit latest

Leon Goretzka would “fit in very well” if he made the move to Tottenham from Bayern Munich, Lothar Matthaus has said.

Speaking to Sport Bild (27 November), the Germany legend said that if Goretzka were to leave Bayern before his contract expires in 2026, Spurs would be one of four ideal clubs for the 29-year-old to join.

Goretzka has been featuring regularly for Bayern recently, but is expected to slip back down the pecking order once the injured Aleksandar Pavlovic and Joao Palhinha return for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Matthaus said: “Consistency is required there, toughness, physical play.

“I don’t necessarily see him at a top five club in Europe, but he can help all the other clubs – Inter, Man United, Tottenham, Atlético Madrid: he would fit in very well there.”

Goretzka being linked with a switch to North London is nothing new, but having been given the seal of approval from arguably Bayern’s greatest ever player, the German international may be keen on a move.

Ange Postecoglou does have a host of strong midfield options at his disposal – even with Rodrigo Bentqancur suspended – and his rotations worked a treat in their 4-0 victory over Manchester City.

James Maddison’s selection in the middle ahead of converted playmaker Dejan Kulusevski may have raised eyebrows, but the Lilywhites’ number 10 re-stamped his credentials with a dominant display.

With Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr, youngsters Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray all vying for the other Spurs midfield spots, Goretzka would find no easy route into more regular minutes should he make the move.

However, given he’s become a serial winner at Bayern and would bring that mentality to a perennially-underachieving team, Postecoglou may see Goretzka as exactly the kind of signing he needs in January.
