Tottenham to raid EFL as Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday transfer update drops

Tottenham are considering a raid on Championship outfits Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday in January, Darren Witcoop reports.

The journalist reported via X [22 December] that goalkeepers Anthony Patterson and Pierce Charles are on the radar as Ange Postecoglou aims to ease the goalkeeping crisis in North London.

Daniel Levy has given the green light to pursue a £20million move for Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford [Sunday Mirror], with a goalkeeper high on the agenda ahead of the January transfer window as number one Guglielmo Vicario is on the sidelines until February.

Witcoop reports that, as well as looking at Trafford, Sunderland’s Patterson and Sheffield Wednesday’s Charles are also of interest.

Postecoglou was believed to be happy for Fraser Forster to enjoy an extended run in the first team in Vicario’s absence, but the mood has shifted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The 36-year-old single-handedly gifted Manchester United a way back into the game during the 4-3 Carabao Cup win on Thursday [19 December], and followed up that display by shipping in six goals in a 6-3 loss against Liverpool on Sunday [22 December].

Therefore, a ball-playing goalkeeper is required for Postecoglou to continue playing his expansive brand of football and, as history suggests, the Australian is unwilling to alter his footballing philosophy.

Trafford is the most attractive target out of the available options – the 22-year-old already has a year’s experience in the top flight under his belt, albeit he couldn’t save Burnley from relegation.

However, should Newcastle United reignite their interest, the promise of becoming the long-term number one at St James’ Park could sway his decision.

The problem for Tottenham is Vicario will expect to resume his first-team duties upon his return, so any January recruit must accept the fact their place will be under threat.

Patterson has conceded 15 goals in 17 starts for Sunderland, keeping seven clean sheets, while Charles has been restricted to four Carabao Cup appearances at Sheffield Wednesday, conceding three goals and keeping one clean sheet.

At 22 and 19 respectively, Postecoglou wants a young goalkeeper who can develop into a world-class talent in North London and, should Trafford opt against a move to Tottenham, the next best option is glaringly obvious.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has been warned four players may never want to play for him again.
