'Unbelievable': Jamie Carragher left stunned by what he's seen Liverpool star do v City and Madrid this week

Virgil van Dijk had a quite superb game for Liverpool against Man City as he once again showed his class in the back four for the Reds.

The Dutchman was at his imperious best to keep out Erling Haaland and ensure Liverpool put one hand on the Premier League trophy and effectively knock City out of the race.

Liverpool fans lauded Van Dijk for his performance and it was very much the performance of a player who is right at the top of his game.

Of course, the debate over who the greatest centre-back in the world is has raged for years and because it is subjective, everyone has an opinion.

But according to Jamie Carragher, Van Dijk has proven this week against Haaland and Kylian Mbappe just how good he is.

Jamie Carragher says why Virgil van Dijk is the Premier League’s best ever defender

Taking to X to share his thoughts on Van Dijk and his performances this week, Carragher posted a long-winded explanation of the Dutchman’s brilliance.

Carragher noted the likes of Haaland and Mbappe coming to Anfield in the same week, before saying he now feels Van Dijk is above John Terry in the best ever conversation.

Liverpool will never replace Virgil van Dijk

With Van Dijk, Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold all coming to the end of their contracts in 2025, Liverpool are in for a huge summer.

Carragher has said that Liverpool should stick to their principles when it comes to new deals for the likes of Salah and Van Dijk.

However, if they do allow them to go, then the Reds simply won’t replace them. Especially Van Dijk.

The defender is at a point now where he is back to the form he showed when Liverpool won the title under Jurgen Klopp and it’s a worrying sign for the rest of the league.

Erling Haaland never got a sniff and if this continues, Liverpool will be champions.
