'Understatement' - DR journo shares what left Clement 'Ashen Faced' in Rangers v Tottenham

Rangers boss Philippe Clement was left “ashen-faced” when Harry Souttar went down injured during their 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Thursday night, Daily Record journalist Graeme Young said.

Rangers took the lead in their Europa League clash with Tottenham before being pegged back by Dejan Kulusevski, which would prove to be the final goal of the game.

Scotland centre-back Souttar started the game and has been a key player for the Gers but Young noticed Clement “ashen-faced” with what happened on 12 December.

“Describing Clement’s coupon as ashen-faced when Souttar collapsed to the turf would be the understatement of the year,” Young said via a column on the Daily Record (13 December).

“The Scotland international has been soaring in a season when Rangers have been stuttering. Souttar’s career has been beset by injuries and, while it would be remiss to describe a suspected groin injury as minor, the hushed silence coupled with the manager’s ghostly look, it appeared it could have been a whole lot worse.”

It was another solid performance from Rangers as a whole against Spurs on Wednesday night as has been the case for several weeks now in fact.

They will feel perhaps hard done by to have only come away from the encounter with a point with several players impressing including Hamza Igamane.

However, the injury to Souttar could play a part in derailing the form that Clement has worked so hard for his team to rekindle after what was a dismal start to the campaign.

It will almost certainly see the Scotland international ruled out for the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic at the weekend and the type of injury could see him out for several weeks.

Rangers, thankfully, do have players to cover in that area but that does little to soften the blow of the loss of one of their only consistent positives from the campaign so far.
