Rangers have fallen into a “vicious cycle” with sacking managers as the potential builds of Philippe Clement losing his job, according to Robbie Copeland.
Copeland’s report in the Daily Record [13 November] accused the Gers of allowing Celtic to stroll merrily towards Scottish domestic dominance by costing themselves millions in sacking and appointing bosses.
The journalist described the process as: sack the manager; appoint the replacement; initial upturn towards the end of the season; summer transfer window optimism; fall apart; sack the manager.
As such, he believes Rangers are unlikely to pull the trigger and will instead focus on riding out the “crisis”.
He said: “With so much upheaval behind the scenes, cash reserves depleted, and some signs of life evident on the pitch, the club clearly feel that now is the time to stare down the crisis and give the current manager all the backing they can.
“Will that pay off? The rest of the season will tell.”
Rangers in dire financial straits if they sack Philippe Clement
Having already recently reported losses in excess of £17million, to sack Clement now and pay up a contract running until the summer of 2028 could signify financial implosion.
The Rangers board, already fragmented and in immediate need of significant appointments, would be writing the club’s own death wish once a successor is named, as the club then have to juggle the payments of four managers.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale as well as Clement all remain on the payroll at Ibrox, and the club had to dispense with a host of experienced heads over the summer to cover a wage cull of around £5.5million.
There could be an argument for issuing Clement his farewell if there was a guaranteed successful approach coming next, but football never provides such a promise.
The situations are different to the previous two managers here – particularly Beale, who with little “number one” coaching experience was given the keys to the club’s finances – whereas, hard as it can be at times to believe, Clement’s appointment was one with a more measured recruitment approach.
As Copeland points out, this time around might just be the time to hang fire and stick with the hand they’ve got.
In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen could provide Clement a huge festive gift by securing the signing of this “unplayable” hotshot from the EFL.
