Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-0 win over Southampton saw Son Heung-min produce one of the most productive first-half displays in Premier League history.
Son’s goal and pair of assists for Pape Sarr and James Maddison helped Spurs score five first-half goals for the first time in Premier League history, as well as achieving a personal milestone in the process.
His second assist for Maddison’s close-range effort on the stroke of half-time made it 68 in total for the Lilywhites, overtaking Darren Anderton as the club’s record Premier League assist-maker.
Having already scored in a 100th Premier League match – becoming just the 20th player to do so – Son was withdrawn at half-time, rested by Ange Postecoglou with a 5-0 win already in the bag.
Son Heung-min unplayable for Tottenham v Southampton
Son’s numbers at St. Mary’s were nothing short of frightening, particularly when considering they were racked up in half the time it would take most players to accumulate such a level of performance.
In 45 minutes, Son fired off a whopping seven shots – with one blocked and four goalbound attempts on target at an accuracy rate of 67 per cent [FotMob] – as seven of his 31 touches came in the Saints box.
Completing 94 per cent of his passes and producing a combined 0.67 expected goals and assists [SofaScore], Son’s efforts yielded 0.79 xGOT in total as Spurs devastated the Southampton defence.
At face value, Son was at his creative best in the final third with two assists and a 100 per cent long-ball accuracy [FotMob], but could only find a man with one of four crosses and lost possession three times.
Losing all five of his duels and completing just one ball recovery in the first half, there are still areas for Son to improve, but Postecoglou will hope his second-half rest allows the South Korean to come back even stronger when Spurs face Manchester United in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.
