Ange Postecoglou risks losing his job at Tottenham if he persists with his defensive build-up play after the 1-0 loss against Bournemouth.

Spurs have lost six matches in the league this year after the defeat at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday [5 December] and now have the same losses on record as Premier League strugglers Everton and Crystal Palace.

Jamie O’Hara branded Postecoglou’s tendency to play out from the back as a “joke” and believes it “should be banned” as the visitors played into Bournemouth’s game plan on the night.

The Tottenham faithful is losing patience with Postecoglou after the 1-1 draw against Fulham on the weekend, and tempers in North London could be set to boil over as the Australian pays the price for his stubbornness once again.

Tottenham cannot keep playing the same way without the desired personnel

In an ideal world, Postecoglou would have lined up on Thursday evening with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in the backline, with the pair executing his desired build-up play originating in the defence to perfection.

However, Tottenham were forced to rely upon Radu Dragusin and makeshift centre-back Ben Davies to partner in central defence, and Postecoglou pressed on with his usual game plan without acknowledging the significant drop-off in quality.

Dragusin completed only 80 per cent of his 60 passing attempts on the South Coast and only managed to complete 40 per cent of his long ball attempts when opting for a more direct approach against Bournemouth, losing possession of the ball 14 times [Sofascore].

Archie Gray endured a similarly torrid evening on the ball from right-back, completing 80 per cent of his passes from 44 attempts, completing 33 per cent of his long balls and losing possession 13 times.

However, despite the rigorous Bournemouth press, Postecoglou saw no need to change the gameplan and saw his blushes spared in the final 20 minutes of the contest when Evanilson’s 72nd-minute strike was ruled out for offside.

Fraser Forster, who was enjoying a relatively solid performance, completing 90 per cent of his passes, sent a wayward pass towards Dejan Kulusevski, who Tyler Adams ultimately dispossessed, and his effort ricocheted into the path of Evanilson to convert into an empty net.

The warning signs could not have been more apparent at the Vitality, and now the frustrations towards the Australian are undoubtedly justified – the same tactics will not work against every opponent, the best managers adapt, and Postecoglou refuses to do so.

All the good faith earned from the 4-0 win against Manchester City has been wiped away only a fortnight later, and Postecoglou will well and truly be in the firing line after another setback in the race for Champions League qualification.
