Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is “unlikely” to feature against Fulham on Sunday.
Spurs were frustrated on Thursday [28 November] as Roma scored a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 UEFA Europa League draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with one player letting Postecoglou down in the clash after a “ridiculous” moment.
Therefore, Postecoglou will be keen for his side to bounce back when they host Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday [1 December], a match which one player must be dropped for after his performance on Thursday.
However, that will be easier said than done with one player likely to miss out again.
While speaking ahead of the clash [via Football London, 29 November], Postecoglou issued an injury update on centre-back Romero.
The Australian said, “Unlikely when it comes to returns but Romero is closer but probably unlikely. I’m not ruling him out. He’s got to get through a few things today and then there’s a session tomorrow.”
Cristian Romero “unlikely” to feature for Tottenham against Fulham
Romero is one of Spurs’ key players.
As per fbref, the 27-year-old ranks in the 99th percentile of his positional peers in England’s top flight for the number of tackles he has won this season [2.06 per 90] as well as the 97th percentile for the number of dribblers he has tackled [1.31 per 90].
He also ranks in the top three per cent of Premier League centre-backs for his total passing distance [1384.50 yards per 90] as well as his total progressive passing distance [543.09 yards per 90], while he also sits in the top five per cent for the number of passes he has played into the final third [7.97 per 90].
Therefore, it is clear to see why Postecoglou will be desperate to get the 26-year-old back on the pitch.
And the performance of Radu Drăgușin against Roma only further emphasises how much Romero is missed.
As per Sofascore, the Romanian lost both the duels he contested, one on the ground and one in the air, while he also gave away four fouls.
Therefore, the sooner Romero is available for selection again, the better.
