Ange Postecoglou would be wise to replace Dominic Solanke at half-time against Roma at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son Heung-min got Spurs off to the perfect start in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday [28 November], scoring from the penalty spot in the 5th minute after Pape Matar Sarr had been fouled by Mats Hummels.

However, that lead wouldn’t last long as Evan Ndicka equalised in the 19th minute, heading home from a free-kick which Radu Drăgușin had given away.

And Roma thought they had taken the lead just moments later, only for Stephan El Shaarawy to see his strike ruled out for offside after some brilliant link-up play with Paulo Dybala.

It was a let-off for Postecoglou’s side who arguably deserved to be behind after a sloppy start to the match.

However, the disallowed goal acted as a wake-up call, with Spurs improving from this point onward and regaining the lead through Brennan Johnson in the 33rd minute.

With Son and Johnson scoring and Dejan Kulusevski providing an assist, the only attacking player who failed to contribute in the first half was Solanke. Therefore, Postecoglou should consider replacing the striker.

Solanke was rather anonymous during the first 45 minutes.

As per Sofascore, his only meaningful action in front of goal was the one big chance he missed, while he also managed just 18 touches of the ball overall.

He did complete 82% per cent of his passes. However, none of those were key, and he also struggled defensively, winning just 25 per cent of his ground duels (one out of four) and zero per cent of his aerial duels.

The striker also gave possession away five times and committed two fouls. As a result, the striker should be on the chopping block at halftime.

While there aren’t many natural replacements for Solanke on the bench, Postecoglou could move Son through the middle, and bring on James Maddison, who perhaps felt as though he should have started.

Alternatively, Postecoglou could be bold and hand Luca Williams-Barnett a record-breaking appearance off the bench.
