Ange Postecoglou could axe Brennan Johnson when Tottenham take on Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
Spurs suffered one of their most miserable defeats of the season on Thursday [5 December], losing 1-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League at the Vitality Stadium, with fans seemingly turning on Postecoglou after the match.
The Australian is at risk of facing the sack after the way his team played on the South Coast.
Therefore, this match against Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 8 December is a big one, and Postecoglou will need to get his team selection absolutely spot on.
Ange Postecoglou to make three changes for Tottenham v Chelsea?
Fraser Forster will expect to continue between the sticks. Despite some shaky moments with the ball at his feet, the 36-year-old impressed overall against Bournemouth, making seven saves from inside the box [Sofascore].
Alan Shearer blasted Destiny Udogie after an “awful” moment on Thursday night. However, Postecoglou doesn’t have many alternative options right now and could be forced to stick with the Italian against Chelsea.
Pedro Porro was left out, perhaps surprisingly, against Bournemouth, with Archie Gray starting at right-back. Gray played reasonably well, winning five of his seven ground duels and completing 80 per cent of his passes. However, the England youth international will likely make way for Porro against Chelsea.
Ben Davies hobbled off with what looked like a hamstring injury against the Cherries. Luckily for Postecoglou, Cristian Romero is due to return to training on Friday [via Football London, 6 December]. As a result, the Spurs boss might have no choice but to throw him back in at the deep and start him alongside Radu Drăgușin, who struggled at the Vitality Stadium, making two errors which led to a shot.
Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma weren’t at their best against Andoni Iraola’s side, with the latter providing just one accurate long ball from six attempts while the former won just 50 per cent of his ground duels.
However, Postecoglou will likely have to start both players against Chelsea, with Rodrigo Bentancur still unavailable. Meanwhile, James Maddison, who was one of the better players against Bournemouth as he played two key passes and won six fouls for his side, should keep his place in the team.
Ange Postecoglou to axe Brennan Johnson for Tottenham v Chelsea?
Johnson started over Son Heung-min on the left-hand side on Thursday. However, the Welshman made little to no impact on the night.
While he did play one key pass and succeed with both of his attempted dribbles, the forward also completed just 76 per cent of his passes while zero per cent of his crosses were accurate.
Therefore, he could be replaced by Son, while Dejan Kulusevski keeps his place on the right.
Dominic Solanke was also poor against his former side, completing just 75 per cent of his passes while failing to find the target with any of his three shots. However, Postecoglou doesn’t have many options up top right now, which means the Englishman is likely to keep his place on Sunday.
In other Tottenham news, the club will jet a forward into the UK within days as a January signing is agreed.
