Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will have been one of the most frustrated managers in the Premier League heading into the international break.

The Australian watched on in disbelief as his side crumbled to a 3-2 defeat against Brighton at the Amex Stadium to see a five-match winning streak in all competitions grind to a halt.

In isolation, losing away at Brighton needn’t be cause for too much consternation. The Seagulls are a young, vibrant team capable of beating anyone on their day on home turf.

But it was the manner of the loss that left so many supporters flummoxed. Spurs led 2-0 in a first half they completely dominated before three goals in the space of 18 second-half minutes saw the game turned on its head.

Given so many in the squad had to immediately jet off with their international sides, the defeat will have been stewing with Postecoglou and his players for several days without any time to start rectifying it.

Son Heung-min return can boost Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham

One player who did not go away with his nation, though, was skipper Son Heung-min with the South Korea ace having missed three straight games for Spurs.

However, the attacker could be in contention to face the Hammers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (19 October) with reliable Spurs insider Paul O Keefe saying via X (10 October) reporting “positive injury news” on Son, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison.

Moreover, Son took to Instagram on Sunday (13 October) in a post shared on X by @Daily_Hotspur to write: “Back soon.”

It is exactly the news Postecoglou needs both from an attacking perspective and a leadership perspective.

In stats provided by SofaScore, Son has two goals from five Premier League games this season, which is slightly above his xG rate of 1.39 and is yet to miss any “big chances”.

He is averaging 1.4 shots per game and 0.8 per game on target, numbers Postecoglou will hope to see increase when he returns, while his goal-conversion rate sits at 29 per cent.

The 32-year-old also has two assists, better than his xA of 1.10, and created four big chances for his team-mates.

With a pass accuracy of 86 per cent (89 in his own half, 82 in the opposition half) and 80 per cent accurate long balls, Son brings so much potency to Spurs’ attack.

Additionally, with 1.2 average possession won per 90 minutes and four balls recovered on average, his work off the ball is equally important to Spurs.

There was gloom heading into the international break but it looks, judging from the player himself, that some of that is going to be lifted by the fact Son will be involved against West Ham.

And that is just superb news for an under-fire boss desperate to see his side rebound this weekend.

In other Tottenham news, one player should surely be in contention to start this weekend after what he did on Saturday.
