Sean Dyche may be one forward down during the international break amid a surprise twist regarding the international future of Beto.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo reported on 2 October that Beto looks set to link up with Guinea-Bissau’s squad to face Mali home and away in back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month.

The Lisbon-born Toffees frontman had rejected previous call-ups from the country of his parents’ birth, but has now opted to play for Guinea-Bissau after previously hoping to represent Portugal internationally.

The Djurtus are coached by former Fulham and West Ham star Luis Boa Norte, who told O Jogo: “Beto has been called up.

“It is because he showed an interest in being present and helping the Guinea-Bissau national team. We are counting on him.”

International call-up has to ignite Beto’s Everton career

While Dyche will want to keep as many of his injury-hit squad together during the international break, he’ll be hopeful that a chance of scenery can help Beto to find his shooting boots.

Signed from Udinese for an eye-watering £25.8million fee in 2023 [Reuters], the 26-year-old striker has only managed six goals in Blues colours and is clearly second-choice to Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front.

Armando Broja’s arrival at Goodison Park on 30 August also provides further competition for the misfiring Toffees frontman, though he isn’t expected to make his return from injury until November [Klaudio Ndreca, 1 October].

With Calvert-Lewin already off the mark in the league this season – while Beto has only scored in the EFL cup against Doncaster – there seems to be no sign of an immediate change in Dyche’s striking hierarchy.

If he takes to international football like a duck to water though, Beto can not only give Guinea-Bissau fans a new hero to follow, but also give Dyche something to think about once the Premier League returns.

It is bittersweet news in many ways as, while Dyche would not doubt have wanted to keep his back-up forward fresh ready for the return of club action, this will give Beto a chance to truly kickstart his career.

In other Everton news, the Toffees face an unthinkable scenario with one of their key players on the radar of their biggest rivals.
