Chris Sutton is not confident that Everton can overcome their opponents Brentford this weekend as Premier League action returns in what could spell bad news for Sean Dyche.
With pressure increasing on manager Dyche as his side sit just three points clear of the relegation zone, anything other than a win this weekend would only add to the growing restlessness around Goodison Park.
It must also be factored in that Everton have had statistically the easiest start of any side so far, and have games against Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City to come over the next five weeks or so, adding even more importance to getting three points against Brentford.
With Brentford getting reinforcements from the injury room in the form of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa ahead of the weekend’s game, the Toffees will certainly have a test on their hands to pick up what would be only their third win of the season.
In what could prove to be a big game, Sutton believes Everton’s home form could cost them three points as he gave his Premier League predictions to the BBC Sport website [21 November].
“Brentford are like Jekyll and Hyde, depending on where you play them,” he said.
“They have the best home record in the Premier League this season, but the second-worst away – they have lost five out of five on the road.
“Mind you, Everton’s home form is hardly impressive either. This may be their final season at Goodison Park but they have only won one league game there so far.
“So, looking at form does not really help me much here and I am finding Sean Dyche’s side very difficult to predict anyway.
“I am going to play it safe and go for a draw, mainly because I think Brentford duo Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo are really talented players who always look like scoring, and the Bees always concede a few too.
“Brentford have scored 22 and conceded 22 in their 11 league games and I think they will add two more to both totals on Saturday. Prediction: 2-2.”
Everton need a result to secure the future of Sean Dyche
After a poor start to the season, it is no surprise to see pressure mounting upon Dyche as we look towards league action again.
Brentford have been somewhat inconsistent so far this year, meaning the Toffees could have an opportunity to get a victory on home turf this weekend.
However, with some important players returning from injury for their opponents and question marks surrounding the fitness of Jarrad Branthwaite, the boss will no doubt be feeling some nerves going into this game.
Given it is the club’s final season at Goodison Park, fans would have been hopeful of making it more of a fortress than has been possible so far this year and they definitely won’t want to be in another relegation battle.
With three tough games coming up for the Toffees, three points in this one are a must for Dyche to guarantee his future.
In other Everton news, a decision has to be made over the future of out of favour Toffees loanee.
