Everton manager Sean Dyche has admitted that the Toffees’ business may well be done this summer after a busier-than-expected start to the window.
The Blues have managed to bolster their options in attack and defence heading into the new campaign, whilst also adding a greater element of depth to their ranks having looked low on numbers at times last season.
However, there is a desire within Goodison Park to add a bit more Premier League experience to the squad, particularly in midfield where the Toffees have been linked with several players [TEAMtalk, 2 August].
One name repeatedly linked with a move to Merseyside had been Manchester City midfielder, with the Blues understood to be eager to secure the England international’s services on a temporary basis [Alex Crook, 23 July].
Unfortunately, Dyche’s Toffees have been beaten to his signature, with newly promoted Ipswich Town confirming on Friday (16 August) that he had joined Kieran McKenna’s ranks at Portman Road for the season.
The Tractor Boys also appear set to win the race for Jens Cajuste [Fabrizio Romano, 13 August] who was linked with a move to Goodison [TEAMtalk, 13 August].
While Toffees target and Chelsea youngster Lesley Ugochukwu is set to join Southampton on loan [The Athletic, 15 August].
Will Scott McTominay exit Manchester United amid Everton transfer rumours?
Kevin Thelwell and the recruitment team at Goodison are now running out of options in the middle of the park and the time may now be right for them to revisit a move for Scott McTominay.
Everton are understood to be one of several clubs to have enquired about the Scottish international’s availability, with Manchester United expected to accept a bid in the region of £25million [The Athletic, 13 August].
While that may be more than the Toffees were originally expecting or willing to pay, with time running out in the window, it might be time for the Blues to bite the bullet and make an offer for the midfielder.
Dyche and Thelwell will have to weigh up whether or not a deal is affordable between now and the end of August.
But with other clubs chasing McTominay, they may be forced to make a transfer call sooner rather than later.
