Dwight McNeil could single-handedly give Everton supporters a final victory against Liverpool at Goodison Park after rediscovering his set-piece prowess in the 4-0 win against Wolves.
The Blues returned to winning ways in resounding fashion on Wednesday evening [4 December] as Ashley Young, Orel Mangala and two Craig Dawson own goals rounded off a phenomenal performance for Sean Dyche’s men.
However, as per the Liverpool Echo [5 December], Everton have lacked a killer edge from set-pieces this year, scoring only four times from dead-ball situations thus far – the 18 goals scored last term was the second highest in the Premier League.
All of the Toffees’ four goals against Wolves came from set-pieces and, as Dyche prepares for a historic Merseyside derby clash on Saturday [7 December], McNeil has rediscovered his set-piece threat at the perfect time.
Everton can beat Liverpool through set-pieces
McNeil has seen his impact on Merseyside stunted in recent weeks after his phenomenal goalscoring form at the beginning of the campaign.
Although he was not credited with any goal contributions against Wolves, his free-kick led to Mangala doubling the hosts’ advantage, and Dawson’s own goals were courtesy of his deliveries.
The 25-year-old oozed quality on the night, and he will need to be at his best from set-pieces once again as he prepares to face the Premier League leaders and high-flying Liverpool, as admittedly, going toe-to-toe with Arne Slot’s side would not work out well for Everton.
Therefore, with Ibrahima Konate missing and one of Joe Gomez or Jarell Quansah expected to start, Dyche can take advantage of McNeil’s delivery from dead-ball situations to make for an uncomfortable afternoon for Liverpool.
Considering how “woeful” Jack Harrison has played for the Blues this year, the hosts will likely find themselves significantly outmatched on the pitch and must utilise any advantage possible, including playing to the occasion – the supporters will undoubtedly act as the 12th man to lift their side in the final Merseyside derby bow at Goodison Park.
The Reds proved in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United on Wednesday that there are frailties for Everton to exploit, and the clash on the weekend could ultimately be decided by who comes out on top in the set-piece battle.
McNeil has, for the most part, been burdened with carrying the attacking threat on his shoulders alone for Everton this season, and this will likely be the case once again, only this time, he could truly endear himself to the supporters by manufacturing a monumental victory against Liverpool.
In other Everton news, Andy Goldstein was stunned by what Darren Bent said about the Blues and Sean Dyche.
