View: Tottenham may already Romero replacement under their nose

Tottenham may well have ready-made central-defensive cover as they are reportedly set to make a decision on the future of Ashley Phillips.

In their 4-3 loss against Chelsea on Sunday [8 December], Ange Postecoglou’s side suffered two injury blows with both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero forced off during the game.

According to journalist Gaston Edul, Romero will be out for six weeks, which leaves the Spurs boss with a lack of defensive options.

However, The Standard has reported that the club are considering the possibility of recalling Phillips from his loan spell at Stoke City.

The 19-year-old academy graduate joined the Potters on a season-long loan deal in the summer but his parent club do have the option to recall him from January if needs be.

The teenager has managed to establish himself in the Championship side this season and is playing 90 minutes every week for Narcis Pelach.

The defender is yet to make his first appearance for the North London side, but if recalled by Postecoglou, he could well have his first outing after the club signed him in 2023 from Blackburn Rovers.

It’s something that Spurs will have to consider carefully, though, because if he makes an appearance for the Lilywhites, he will not be able to go back out on loan for the remainder of the campaign. That could mean hampering his progress if he was being brought back to sit on the bench.

However, you can imagine that it would be a great relief for the Australian manager to have proper defensive options in his squad, especially during a time when his side are looking highly inconsistent and need to get some good results under their belts.

If the Lilywhites do decide to recall the 19-year-old, it would be nice to see him get an opportunity in the side. If he can make an impact, he could well prove to be more than just a cover for Romero going forward.
