George Abbott’s first career goal yielding an FA Cup award shows the huge potential of the Tottenham youngster on loan at Notts County.

The FA Cup’s official X account posted on 3 December to state that Abbott’s long-range effort against Peterborough United was the goal of the second round, after he scored from the right-hand touchline.

Peterborough goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic’s error from a free-kick gave Abbott an open goal to aim at, but he was still well over 40 yards out as his curling strike swirled into the back of the unguarded net.

It’s a first career goal for 19-year-old Abbott, who started on the right of a front three, and though it was only consolation in a 4-3 defeat, plenty of heads will have been turned by the audacity of his strike.

While Abbott’s superb, improvised effort was nothing short of spectacular for the Magpies, their 4-3 FA Cup exit at the hands of Peterborough means he won’t be able to provide further moments of magic.

Abbott is, however, continuing to impress in League Two for his new side, having made 11 starts and two substitute appearances so far in the midfielder’s first real taste of regular first-team game-time.

The teenager’s debut for Spurs has already come and gone, appearing as a substitute on the final day of the 2022/23 season at Elland Road but hardly being seen since in Lilywhite first-team circles.

A chance to be given more regular minutes looks to be paying off handsomely so far, with Abbott even being backed to make a two-division jump and move on loan to a Championship club next season.

That will only see the youngster edge further towards his breakthrough in North London, and if his trajectory continues for the next few years, expect plenty more moments of magic along the way.

In other Tottenham news, one Spurs outcast has been offered a route out of North London after a club registered their interest.
