Tottenham have had a rather topsy-turvy time this season across all competitions with Ange Postecoglou’s men currently sitting 10th in the Premier League.
There have been times this term when it’s felt like all hope is lost for the Australian at Spurs but after his team’s performance against the Saints on Sunday, it feels like he could be about to get them back on track.
Granted, it’s only one game against a relegation-battling team and the fact they drew 1-1 with Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday is still more than likely hanging over their heads but, if Tottenham and James Maddison can figure out a way to replicate this form across all competitions, they could be in for an impressive end to the campaign.
Tottenham beat Russell Martin’s men 5-0 in their Premier League clash with Maddison getting his name on the scoresheet twice.
Speaking about the Englishman’s second of the night, Peter Crouch lauded the former Leicester City man for his “unbelievable” finish.
“It was an unbelievable finish,” he said live on TNT Sports 1. “We’re sitting in here and we’ve got a Southampton player with us and it’s quite downbeat at the moment but we have to applaud Tottenham’s play as well.
“As poor as Southampton have been defensively, some of Tottenham’s players have been brilliant and James Maddison has epitomised that with a brilliant finish.”
Why Ange Postecoglou needs to start James Maddison for Tottenham more often
If Sunday’s game against Southampton has taught Postecoglou anything, it’s that Maddison is a key component of his team.
This season, the former Celtic boss has started Maddison in 15 of the 23 games they’ve played this term and while that may seem like a regular role, he’s often been taken out early in the games he’s played (Transfermarkt).
As per Sofascore, in the 77 minutes he was on the pitch against Southampton, Spurs’ number 10 maintained a pass accuracy of 85 per cent and had 62 touches of the ball.
He was deployed in his natural role of attacking midfield and more than prospered from that position with the 28-year-old also netting twice himself.
Attacking-wise, he was in impressive form as, of the 41 passes he successfully completed, Maddison made two key passes and completed 100 per cent of the dribbles he attempted.
The Englishman also put in a shift defensively as he won 77 per cent of his ground duels and made one tackle.
He did lose the ball 11 times and was fouled twice but when you’re the playmaker for your team, you don’t likely go in expecting to have the perfect game.
If Maddison can keep up this level of form for the rest of the season, it’s hard to see how Postecoglou’s job would be at risk.
