Andy Walker wants figures of authority at Rangers and Celtic to address the issue of “vile” chants from both sets of fans.
Speaking on Go Radio (12 September), the ex-Celtic striker was discussing the story that St Johnstone have refused to give Old Firm fans a larger away allocation for matches at McDiarmid Park.
Walker called on higher-ups at both clubs to take action and put a stop to the tragedy chanting which can be heard from both Gers and Hoops fans on a near-weekly basis, regardless of the venue.
Wales said: “Just the vile abuse that is spewed out, forget all the stuff about the King and the Crown.
“I just wish someone with a bit of authority at Celtic and Rangers might just want to say ‘guys, what are we doing here? What are we signing here?’
“Nothing seems to be getting done about it – I’ve been listening to this nonsense for too long.”
Walker added: “Nothing seems to be getting done about it. I’ve been listening to this nonsense for too long.
“And this new stuff about recent individuals and happily singing about people dying, it is just disgusting.”
Rangers and Celtic must come together to stop vile chanting
The only way in which this issue will truly be addressed, and brought to a halt, is by fans and club officials of both Old Firm sides uniting against the hatred which fuels such language.
Glasgow being divided down blue and green lines is nothing new – and isn’t set to change any time soon – but the nature of the rivalry does not have to be represented in the form of tragedy chanting.
Referencing the deceased ex-players of opposition sides undoubtedly results in emotional reactions, and therefore it’s no surprise that when Old Firm fixtures come around, different rules apply to the fans.
The banning of Gers and Celtic away supporters from Parkhead and Ibrox respectively has been roundly slammed by pundits, but until the SFA and both clubs address hateful chanting, nothing will change.
Walker’s plea for action from officials at both clubs simply has to be heard, otherwise the potential of Old Firm matches, and other games around the country, will continue to be limited.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement has a big decision to make on one Gers player as he takes his side to Dundee United.
