Wayne Rooney sack: Disbelief at Plymouth Argyle boss 'gone by Christmas'

Wayne Rooney could be sacked from his role as Plymouth Argyle manager before Christmas, Kris Boyd has suggested to disbelief from his fellow Sky Sports pundits.

The former Man United and England striker has had a mixed time in charge of the Pilgrims since taking over the Championship club in the summer.

While there have been some positive results, they have also been on the end of some thrashings, not least a 6-1 pummelling by Norwich City on Tuesday night (26th November).

Rooney is now not the only Premier League icon in managing in the Championship, following the appointment of Frank Lampard by Coventry City.

Boyd though, is unsure whether the former Man United man will last long enough at Home Park to face up against his old top-flight rival, when their two clubs are due to go head-to-head on Boxing Day.

That though, is a take that is seems not everyone on the panel agrees with at this moment in time.

Boyd had been discussing Lampard’s new job with the Sky Blues on Soccer Saturday, when host Simon Thomas cut in (1.42pm): “And by the way, Boxing Day, Lampard-Rooney go head to head.”

“Maybe,” Boyd replied to laughs from Paul Merson. “Boydy, ahh, as things stand,” Thomas added.

Clinton Morrison then said: “He’s 100% right [about a previous point] there’s no-one running away with this Championship. This Championship is so tight. I can’t believe Boydy just said that.”

Wayne Rooney could leave Plymouth before Frank Lampard clash

Football Insider Opinion

It might seem somewhat of a shock for Rooney to be given the sack as things stand right now, even after a 4-0 battering by Bristol City on Saturday.

However, the Pilgrims have currently not been cut adrift at the bottom of the table, and are in a position where they have a chance of avoiding relegation again.

Some of the results and performances they have produced this season suggest Rooney does have the backing of his squad, and can get something of his players, but the latest one won’t have inspired much confidence.

Everton
Frank Lampard may not got the chance to face ex-England teammate Wayne Rooney at Plymouth.

Either way, they simply have to stop ending up on the wrong end of some of the thrashings they have endured this season, which do by contrast show frailties in Rooney’s setup.

They have conceded more league goals than any other Championship team this season, and if that does not change, it will be extremely hard for them to get out of trouble.

And the former Manchester United and England captain is coming off a chaotic spell in charge at Birmingham City which won’t do much to bolster faith in his abilities to turn things around.

That would then lead to the pressure building on Rooney if they are dragged further into danger, and could potentially force the board to act before they take on Lampard’s Coventry just after Christmas.

In other news, Premier League clubs have been put off making a January move for a Plymouth Argyle player after Rangers’ summer bids.
