'We are in good talks' - Club chief confirms contract negotiations with ace Everton want

Werder Bremen are trying to secure a new contract for Justin Njinmah amid interest from Everton, the club’s director of football has confirmed.

Clemens Fritz told BILD (10 June) that the Bundesliga side are in talks with the 23-year-old, whose current deal doesn’t expire until 2026 anyway, as they are not looking to let him leave following a campaign where he scored six league goals in 24 appearances.

A transfer is reportedly seen as out of the question as a result but the winger’s performances have caught the attentions of various clubs, with a previous report from Kicker (1 May) cited where the Toffees are named alongside Wolves, La Liga side Villarreal and other German clubs in eyeing Njinmah.

Fritz said, translated to English: “Basically, Justin still has a contract and we are very interested in extending it. We are in good talks, but there is no time frame.”

Everton target out of reach for Sean Dyche

Everton clearly need to add wide men to the squad since Dwight McNeil is the only senior option at Goodison Park currently, with youngster Lewis Dobbin also present.

Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison completed the group last term but both have now left at the expiry of their respective loan deals with Villarreal and Leeds United.

Bringing the latter back is seen as a “key ambition” for Sean Dyche this summer and the Whites’ failure to gain promotion back to the Premier League has left the door open to a second loan deal [Liverpool Echo, 5 June].

If Njinmah had been available then he may well have been an attractive prospect to fit into the Toffees bosses’ plans for the new season.

Jack Harrison could make a return to Everton from Leeds United.

But it is going to be tricky enough for Everton to negotiate transfers for players who are available this summer given the financial pressures that remain with regards to profit and sustainability, especially when a pair of transfer fees are already locked in to be paid this month.

So if Werder Bremen are so clear that he isn’t leaving that they are looking to extend a deal that still has two years left as it is then the German is surely an impossibility on Merseyside.

In other Everton news, the takeover race looks like it already might have been won by a specific big-money bidder.
