John Wenham claims Japhet Tanganga could sign for a Premier League club after leaving Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has praised Daniel Levy for allowing the centre-back to leave the club for free.

Tanganga was one of several players who Tottenham announced (5 June) would depart the club following the conclusion of their contracts.

The centre-back will become a free agent once his deal with Spurs expires on 30 June.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes this will help him find a new club.

“Tanganga came through the ranks at Tottenham and I suspect that this decision was a bit of rare goodwill shown by Levy,” Wenham said.

“By allowing him to leave for free it makes him more attractive to other clubs.

“I could see him signing for a Premier League club now. It also means he’s likely to get a higher salary and a signing-on bonus too.”

Why did Daniel Levy allow Japhet Tanganga to leave Tottenham on a free?

Spurs had the option to extend Tanganga’s contract by one year.

Therefore, it would have come as a surprise to many supporters to see that he would be walking away as a free agent.

It was clear that he had no future under Ange Postecoglou, but extending his contract would have at least allowed the club to sell him for a fee.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (12 May), Millwall and Spurs had agreed on a deal for the permanent transfer of the defender.

However, that deal is no longer possible, and Spurs will not be profiting from Tanganga’s departure.

Whatever the true reason behind this decision was will likely never become clear, but if it was a goodwill gesture from Levy toward Tanganga then some praise would have to be offered toward the Spurs chairman.

In other Tottenham news, Real Madrid want to sign Micky van de Ven in a big-money deal.
