West Ham would pull off a huge shock if they replaced struggling Julen Lopetegui with former boss David Moyes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Hammers striker Frank McAvennie doesn’t believe Moyes, 61, will return to the East London club but admits fans would have been happy for him to stay if he played a more attacking style of football.

A ninth-place Premier League finish and a Europa Conference League trophy in the previous season weren’t enough to save Moyes from getting the sack at the end of last season.

Lopetegui was brought in to replace him and the club spent an impressive £121.6million on 10 new first-team players over the summer.

David Moyes West Ham return would be ‘strange’

The Spanish manager is yet to win a Premier League game at the London Stadium, with rivals Chelsea taking them apart with ease in their 3-0 win on Saturday (September 21).

West Ham have now shipped eight goals in their previous two games after their 5-1 League Cup defeat to Liverpool.

“Anthony Joshua couldn’t make it three in a row, I don’t know if David could”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“We’ve spoken about David before, and I don’t really think it was time for him to go, people didn’t want David to go, what they wanted was for him to get the traps of them and let them go and play football.

“They would have been happy with that, and as he kept saying, ‘This man wins games’ and he did, he won games and did brilliant but that’s gone now.

“I didn’t think he’d come back the second time, nothing surprises me now in football, he knows the club inside out.

“It would be strange if he came back, there are totally different personnel now, they’ve brought a lot of new players in and I don’t know if Steidten would like that.

“I don’t think it will happen.”

In other news, Tim Steidten ‘in the firing line’ as West Ham board question signings.
