West Ham news: Stefan Borson drops verdict on Graham Potter wage demands

Graham Potter has likely reset his salary expectations since leaving Chelsea after emerging as the frontrunner to replace Julen Lopetegui as the West Ham manager.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Potter’s wage demands would be in a similar region to what Lopetegui is currently earning at the London Stadium.

There was an initial expectation Lopetegui, 58, would be sacked last week following the 3-1 defeat to Leicester City amid pressure from the fans and a reported bust-up with defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

But the Spaniard was given one more chance to save his job against his former club Wolves on Monday, where his side secured a 2-1 victory.

Football Insider revealed on 6 December Potter, 49, is the clear frontrunner to take over at the London Stadium if the club’s hierarchy decide to sack Lopetegui.

West Ham currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, having won five and lost seven of their opening 15 games of the campaign.

Borson doesn’t believe appointing Potter would be a more expensive move than the terms the club agreed with Lopetegui six months ago.

He told Football Insider: “I suspect Graham Potter’s expectations have reset somewhat given that he’s been out of work for over a year and looking at the clubs he’s looked at as well.

“I would think on a wage for wage basis comparing his wages versus Lopetegui’s, I doubt it would be any more expensive.

“I don’t think that’s going to be the key driver.

“I think compensation for Lopetegui might be an issue.

“But sometimes you have just got to take the pain of the compensation, there is not a lot you can do.”
