Rangers fans criticising Philippe Clement need to realise that they are in a different financial stratosphere to Tottenham or Celtic, Simon Jordan has said.
Speaking on talkSPORT with Bill Leckie (10 December, 12:06pm), Jordan agreed with the journalist’s rejection of criticism aimed at Clement by fans for pointing out the financial disparity between the clubs.
Clement’s side face Tottenham in the Europa League on Thursday and Celtic in the Scottish League Cup Final three days later, with Spurs having a turnover which is roughly four times their own.
Leckie said: “Rangers just declared results of an £88.3million turnover with a £17m loss – they are in a completely different league from a Tottenham or a Celtic.
“The fact that it doesn’t go down well, the fact that Rangers fans don’t want to hear it, is not Philippe Clement’s problem.”
Jordan added: “It’s a statement of fact, certainly with Tottenham. Tottenham’s turnover is £350m quid – Rangers’ is what, £80m?
“So of course it’s comparable to make that kind of observation. What do you want, someone to issue some Braveheart battle cry?”
Rangers face a battle to level the playing field against Tottenham
Following on from last week’s annual general meeting which detailed just how badly the club are losing money hand-over-fist, Gers fans are well aware of how they are run compared to Tottenham or Celtic.
Clement making this clear in an interview isn’t the best PR move, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that when they face Spurs, the Light Blues will line up against a side with four times their turnover.
The Bears have performed brilliantly on the continent this season and thumped Nice 4-1 away from home last time out, but it remains to be seen how Clement will set his side up with Celtic on the horizon.
Clement is yet to win an Old Firm game in five attempts as Gers manager, and with the League Cup Final providing the perfect backdrop for a maiden victory, the Belgian could be forgiven for prioritising it.
Owing to their Champions League status, Celtic are also in greater financial health, and while that’s not a nice fact to acknowledge, it would make a Rangers League Cup victory this Sunday that much sweeter.
In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson has mooted a scenario at Ibroxwhich could land Philippe Clement in “serious trouble”.
