Rangers are reluctant to spend money on Scottish stars such as Lennon Miller and Lawrence Shankland, says Kris Boyd.
The former Ibrox striker said live on Sky Sports ahead of Ross County vs Celtic on 6 October that the Light Blues wouldn’t make the decision to go and spend millions on Motherwell sensation Miller when they were happy to do so for Mohamed Diomande from Nordsjælland.
The pundit bemoaned the fact that the top priority is to recruit from elsewhere and was at a loss to explain why proven options such as Lawrence Shankland aren’t signed.
Boyd said: “I’m looking at, for example, Lennon Miller and I’ll use Rangers for example. Would they go and spend the £4million on Lennon Miller that they went and spent on Diamonde, no they wouldn’t. But he’s been in our league.”
Eilidh Barbour added: “Lawrence Shankland’s the name that was linked with Rangers and never happened.”
“There you go,” Boyd went on. “He’s already proven in our league, that he can score goals in our league. But you would go and spend money on someone from overseas. Why we do that I don’t know but that’s the reality of it.”
Rangers linked to Motherwell and Hearts stars
Miller, 18, is increasingly looking like he is developing into a star as his performances under Stuart Kettlewell improve.
The Light Blues were said to be scouting him during preseason [Football Scotland, 10 July] and a move for the midfielder has been heavily backed by Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson.
But at the current rate Rangers may have missed the boat as his price tag is only going to keep climbing if he keeps up his current levels, leaving Ferguson baffled as to why no move was made before now amid fears a Celtic deal may have been wrapped up in secret [Open Goal, 26 September].
Shankland was the subject of sustained speculation for the best part of a year with Philippe Clement in need of a striker but two transfer windows have now passed without a push to sign him, despite the route being open during the summer [Daily Record, 29 July].
The Jambos captain’s dip in scoring form and the emergence of Hamza Igamane has arguably made the decision not to go for him more understandable right now, but if he hits form again it could be questioned.
Football is a game of a variables and none more so in signing players, so the decision to spend £4.3m on Diomande [Sky Sports, 26 January] and commit something similar to complete Oscar Cortes’ move [Daily Record, 1 June] might prove to be masterstrokes in the long-run.
Additionally, picking up Connor Barron after his Aberdeen exit, and adding John Souttar from Hearts two years ago, shows Rangers haven’t ignored the Scottish Premiership entirely.
But as the club continues to underachieve there remains a feeling at times that they are overcomplicating the situation when answers might be right in front of them.
In other Rangers news, Clement’s complaints about a controversial incident have been unanimously rejected.
