Liverpool have been searching for a new holding midfield player for a long time now.
The Reds tried to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer, but unfortunately, the Spaniard decided to stay at Real Sociedad.
Before that, Liverpool made a club-record £111m bid for Moises Caicedo last year, but the Ecuadorian ultimately decided to join Chelsea.
However, even further back than that, Liverpool’s first key target in this position was Aurelien Tchouameni.
Back in 2022, Liverpool were very keen on Tchouameni, and according to Paul Gorst, speaking on The Redmen TV, this is a deal that could be revisited amid reports in Spain that Tchouameni could leave Real Madrid.
Liverpool could revisit Aurelien Tchouameni deal
Gorst shared his verdict on whether or not Liverpool could go in for the £80m man.
The journalist says that he wouldn’t write off the idea of Liverpool going back in for Tchouameni, claiming that once the Reds are interested in a player, they often remain keen for a long time.
“Reports in Spain have suggested that Real Madrid are open to offers for Tchouameni. We know Liverpool, when we like a player we like a player, that interest doesn’t go anywhere, do you think we would return and revive interest in Tchouameni?
“I wouldn’t totally write it off. I think with Liverpool when they like a player they like a player. They are very diligent, they do their homework on a player in terms of the character, the ability from a data point of view, the traditional scouting.
“Liverpool’s team, structure, set-up, identified Tchouameni two-and-a-half years ago, but it was always thought he would go to Real Madrid. He’s a top player and the interest in top players don’t dissipate do they?
How close did Liverpool come to signing Tchouameni?
Liverpool had a high-profile pursuit of Tchouameni a few years ago, but how close did a deal come to being finalised?
By the sounds of it, this move was very advanced at one point.
Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, Jurgen Klopp even called Tchouameni about a potential move.
“Liverpool really tried to sign Tchouameni, they were upset with that deal. Klopp called the player multiple times, but the player joined Real Madrid. This summer I don’t see Madrid changing a lot in midfield. They have Kroos who signed a contract, Modric will discuss an extension too. I think Tchouameni is going to stay, and for Liverpool there will be other targets. Liverpool still love Tchouameni, but they know he is unavailable,” Romano said.
Romano said that Liverpool still love Tchouameni as a player, and if he is soon available on the transfer market, don’t be surprised if the Reds get involved in this transfer race.
Liverpool also apparently held primitive talks about signing Tchouameni in the summer, so it really wouldn’t be a shock if Arne Slot’s side did look at this as a potential addition again in January or next summer.
This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
