'Wow' - Danny Dyer stunned as Everton player update announced live on talkSPORT

Danny Dyer has given his take on the final England squad for Euro 2024 and was shocked by the exclusion of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, live on talkSPORT.

The radio station shared a post on X [6 June] during their live broadcast from Soccer Aid, at which Dyer will feature this weekend, with the English actor – and father-in-law of Three Lions forward Jarrod Bowen – giving his verdict on Gareth Southgate’s final squad.

Branthwaite was among the surprise omissions from the final 26, which also saw Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish and James Maddison among those cut.

“He’s not taking Branthwaite?!”, Dyer told hosts Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent.

“We haven’t got many defenders have we, so to lose three [Branthwaite, Maguire and Jarell Quansah]… wow.”

Everton enforcer Branthwaite will be England star for years

Amid a few bold calls from Southgate in preparing for the Euros, the debate around the central defenders on the plane to Germany has caused a stir.

Whilst it’s refreshing to see the Three Lions boss steer away from the perception of “favourites” and moving on from some of his trusted old guard (not including the injured Maguire who is still a rock for England), Branthwaite is believed by many to have warranted a place.

A superb young example for Everton throughout 2023-24 as Sean Dyche’s side comfortably avoided the drop despite being docked eight points, the 21-year-old would also have provided a left-footed option.

England’s predicted back four to start the opening match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen – Kyle Walker, John Stones, Marc Guehi and Kieran Trippier – are all right-footed, which raises a few eyebrows.

Southgate claimed the tournament comes a little too soon for the man who made his full England debut against Bosnia & Herzegovina at St. James’ Park on Monday night, and it’s important he dusts himself down quickly because on the current track, Branthwaite is a future first-choice centre-half for the Three Lions.

In other Everton news, one party interested in a stake in the club are believed not to be in a position to complete a deal.
